Patchwork: The Material We’re Made Of – Angeles Salinas – 48″ x 48″ – Mixed Media on Canvas
Patchwork: The Material We’re Made Of
This artwork is part of a series named Patchwork. The paintings in this series are composed of different segments or patches of substrates containing pictorial representations that are stitched and secured together and then forced to coexist as a unity.
In The Material We’re Made Of, the layered textured canvas symbolizes lively colorful fabric (rebozo-like), representing a person’s mood and state of mind that is never steady and is always affected by its surroundings. The newspaper strip confirms how we are embedded in the world and how external events conform to the individual whether he/she is aware of it or not. From in between the layers, huge images of “Milagros” or Mexican charms emerge and become part of the weaving. The “Milagros” are small amulets, physical representations of the object of the prayers offered along with a letter to someone’s favorite Saint or Archangel. They also stand for the individual’s desires, traditions, and beliefs.
Just like each person’s self is constructed of many aspects of their life, events that leave a mark, origins, background, etc. The Patchwork series reminds us that the beauty of life is not only found in isolated events but in the set of experiences that transform us.
